The National Bank of Vanuatu (NBV) provides state-of-the-art banking services across the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. Its retail banking services are delivered through 14 online branches and various electronic and mobile banking platforms, all of which have critical reliance on IT infrastructure. Bank services are a 24/7 operation, and downtime of any kind is not acceptable.

In 2010, due to rapid expansion, the Bank moved from its home of 10 years into brand-new purpose-built four-story premises. NBV engaged Australian Networking Engineers (ANE) to plan, coordinate, and manage the migration of network and server infrastructure to the new building. Their brief was to prepare and move our complex network of 20 servers, numerous subsystems, and telephone systems with minimum service outage.

At the same time, the Bank commissioned a nationwide VSAT network to bring 14 of its 25 remote island branches online, which also had to be integrated into the existing network.

The approach ANE took proved to be very effective. Rather than creating a new network, they made the new building, including the new server and communications room, an extension of the existing network. This circumvented many potential problems and allowed the various hardware items to be simply reconnected at the new location.

Disruption to core banking services was only 30 minutes in the small hours of the morning while the database servers were physically relocated. Opening day of the new building experienced no technical hitches whatsoever. It was a very pleasing result for what could have been a very stressful event if not well managed.
